Nuova Bari Centrale: A Sustainable High-Speed Railway Station

Revolutionizing Bari's Transportation Hub

For 25 years, the city of Bari has been absorbed by a debate on the future of the iron sea which separates its historically defined part and the expansion one. Nuova Bari Centrale, designed by DICAR - Polytechnic of Bari, is set to transform the city's transportation landscape by proposing an innovative and sustainable intermodal node.

With the aim of resolving the problematic node of the tracks moving from the city center to the west, Nuova Bari Centrale is a visionary design that combines functionality, sustainability, and architectural elegance. The station is based on a unique combination of the circle and the square, with a diamond configuration that seamlessly integrates the head type station with the passing one.

The design of Nuova Bari Centrale revolves around three main areas: the glazed coverage of the tracks in the aisle, the two access areas, and the distribution basement. The aisle is dominated by twelve structural trees made of precast recycled steel, providing both structural support and a visually striking element. The roof of the aisle is covered with experimental lenses embedded with photovoltaic cells, generating a significant amount of energy for the station.

The access areas and basement of Nuova Bari Centrale are developed using modular arched structures made of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete blocks and precompressed precast units. This combination of materials ensures durability and sustainability, while also allowing for efficient construction and future adaptability.

The station's dimensions are impressive, with an area of 210 x 90 meters and a height of 22 meters. The circular covers are divided into 40 segments, discretized by flat panels. A metal grates system promotes natural ventilation, enhancing the comfort of passengers. The photovoltaic modules, composed of 8 masterpieces replicated around the rotation axis, are strategically placed to optimize sunlight exposure and minimize shading.

Functionally, Nuova Bari Centrale is designed to be more than just a railway station. The access area features three main directions, two for services and one for the subways distribution node. The underground floor offers more than just transportation, with an indoor square and various shops, making the station a vibrant and lively place throughout the day.

The Nuova Bari Centrale project started in September 2013 and was completed in January 2014. It has received recognition for its sustainable design, earning an honorable mention from the prestigious "Italian Sustainable Award Fassa Bortolo." The design team, led by DICAR - Polytechnic of Bari, consisted of architecture graduates and esteemed thesis supervisors who brought their expertise and passion to create this remarkable transportation hub.

Nuova Bari Centrale is a testament to the power of research and innovation. The project emerged from a MArch degree thesis that focused on the "Grande Bari" plan, aiming to address the railway hub issue in the city. The design team extensively studied European stations, their historical and sociological roles, as well as structural trees and sustainable systems. Advanced modeling tools such as Rhinoceros and Grasshopper were utilized to bring this visionary design to life.

The challenges faced during the design process were significant. Integrating four different rail lines at three different heights, with a 90-degree rail axis turn, required meticulous planning and engineering expertise. Additionally, sustainability was a key consideration, ensuring the durability and performance of the structures and facilities. The total prefabrication and recyclability of materials allow for future dismantling or replacement, further enhancing the station's sustainability.

Nuova Bari Centrale is not only a transportation hub but also a symbol of Bari's commitment to sustainable and innovative design. It is a testament to the power of collaboration between academia and industry, showcasing the potential for architectural excellence and positive environmental impact.
